What's Happening?
Move-In Day Mafia, a nonprofit organization, is dedicated to assisting students aging out of foster care as they transition into college life in metro Atlanta. Founded by Tee J. Mercer, the organization provides essential support by furnishing dorm rooms,
offering monthly care packages, and fostering a sense of community among students attending Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). The initiative aims to ensure that these students do not face the challenges of starting college alone. To fund its activities, Move-In Day Mafia organizes events such as the HBCU Bingo Experience fundraiser.
Why It's Important?
The work of Move-In Day Mafia is crucial in addressing the unique challenges faced by students aging out of foster care. These young adults often lack the familial support systems that many of their peers rely on when starting college. By providing practical assistance and building a supportive community, the organization helps to level the playing field, increasing the likelihood of academic success and personal development for these students. This initiative not only benefits the individuals directly involved but also contributes to broader societal goals of educational equity and social inclusion.
