Mini is reportedly developing its next-generation Cooper Electric with a potential shift from its traditional front-wheel-drive (FWD) layout to a rear-wheel-drive (RWD) setup. This change is suggested by a report from Autocar, indicating that the new
EV Cooper will be built on BMW’s Gen6 platform. This platform currently underpins BMW’s Neue Klasse i3 and iX3 models and is designed with rear-drive in mind. The development work for the next-gen Cooper Electric is underway, with its arrival anticipated in the coming years. The current Gen6 platform does not support FWD cars, as its larger drive motors are equipped for the rear axle, while smaller front axle motors lack gearboxes.
