New Hanover County, NC, has initiated a two-year pilot program called the Food and Medication (FAM) Delivery Program. This initiative aims to reduce food insecurity by addressing transportation and mobility barriers for eligible residents in the county's
eight identified food desert areas. The program provides participants with an Instacart+ annual membership, offering unlimited waived delivery fees for orders over $10. Additionally, it includes a $120 annual stipend through 'Fresh Funds' to encourage the purchase of fresh produce. The FAM Delivery program expands access to national grocery retailers and pharmacies, allowing for the delivery of fresh food, prescription medications, and household goods directly to residents' homes. Eligibility is based on household income, which must be below 300 percent of the federal poverty level, and residency within a designated food desert.
