What's Happening?
Bowers & Wilkins has announced the integration of Presto Music, a specialized classical and jazz streaming service, into its Music App. This partnership allows users with compatible Bowers & Wilkins wireless speakers, including the Zeppelin Pro Edition
and Formation series, as well as supported wireless headphones, to access Presto Music's curated catalog directly. The integration supports lossless streaming at resolutions up to 24-bit/192kHz, with actual playback resolution dependent on the hardware and app capabilities. This move expands the streaming options available within the Bowers & Wilkins ecosystem, providing classical and jazz enthusiasts with a dedicated platform for high-quality audio. Presto Music distinguishes itself with a 'Fair Play' initiative, calculating royalties based on seconds streamed rather than plays, which is particularly relevant for longer classical compositions. The service also offers original reviews, artist interviews, and buying guides from its in-house editorial team.
Why It's Important?
This integration is significant for audiophiles and classical/jazz music enthusiasts in the U.S. who own Bowers & Wilkins audio equipment. It simplifies access to a niche, high-quality music catalog, eliminating the need to switch between multiple applications. For Presto Music, this partnership expands its reach to a premium audio hardware user base, reinforcing its position as a specialized streaming service in a market dominated by broader platforms like Spotify and Apple Music. The focus on high-resolution audio and expert curation caters to a segment of listeners who prioritize sound quality and in-depth musical knowledge. The 'Fair Play' royalty model could also set a precedent or encourage discussions within the wider music industry regarding more equitable compensation for artists, especially those producing longer-form content.
What's Next?
To celebrate the integration, Presto Music is offering a three-month free trial for Bowers & Wilkins users, accessible through the Music App. Following the trial, users can subscribe to one of two paid tiers: the Streaming Plan ($11.99 per month) for unlimited access to over 300,000 albums and high-resolution audio, or the Streaming Plus Plan ($14.99 to $16.99 per month), which includes additional discounts on physical Presto purchases. This move is part of Presto Music's broader strategy to partner with leading audio manufacturers, with existing integrations with brands like Linn, Focal, Naim, and BluOS, and upcoming access through WiiM, Eversolo, and NAD. This trend suggests a continued focus on embedding specialized streaming services directly into high-fidelity audio systems.
Beyond the Headlines
This development highlights a growing trend in the music streaming industry: the rise of niche platforms catering to specific genres or listener preferences, particularly in the high-resolution audio segment. While mainstream services aim for broad appeal, services like Presto Music focus on depth, curation, and specialized features for dedicated audiences. This fragmentation could lead to a more diverse streaming landscape, offering consumers more tailored experiences. Furthermore, Presto Music's unique royalty calculation method challenges the standard per-play model, potentially influencing future discussions about artist compensation and intellectual property rights in the digital age. This specialized approach also emphasizes the value of human curation and expert knowledge in an era dominated by algorithmic recommendations, particularly for complex genres like classical music.
