What's Happening?
Subaru of America, in collaboration with its agency Carmichael Lynch, has reported that its annual 'Share the Love' Event has donated over $320 million to various charities over 17 years. Launched in 2008, this year-end sales event allows customers to choose
between national charity partners and local hometown charities for donations. The national partners named in 2019 included the ASPCA, Make-A-Wish, and Meals on Wheels America. The event was designed to differentiate December sales by focusing on charitable giving rather than solely on incentives. Subaru and its more than 600 retailers have supported nearly 2,700 hometown charities, contributing to significant impacts such as supporting over 57,000 animals with the ASPCA and delivering nearly 5 million meals with Meals on Wheels. The company has maintained a consistent structure for the event, allowing for comparable reporting of its charitable contributions.
Why It's Important?
The 'Share the Love' Event highlights a significant trend in corporate social responsibility within the U.S. automotive industry. By integrating charitable giving directly into its sales model, Subaru of America has created a unique marketing strategy that resonates with consumers who value social impact. This approach not only fosters goodwill but also differentiates Subaru in a highly competitive market, potentially influencing purchasing decisions. The event's success demonstrates how brands can build long-term customer loyalty and positive public perception by aligning with philanthropic causes. The involvement of local retailers further strengthens community ties, providing direct support to thousands of local charities across the country and showcasing a decentralized yet impactful giving model. This strategy could serve as a blueprint for other U.S. businesses looking to combine commercial objectives with meaningful social contributions.
What's Next?
Subaru of America is likely to continue its 'Share the Love' Event, given its long-standing success and positive impact. The consistent structure and growing donation totals suggest that this initiative will remain a core part of Subaru's year-end sales and marketing strategy. Other automotive brands and companies in various sectors may observe Subaru's model and explore similar cause-related marketing campaigns, potentially leading to an increase in corporate philanthropic efforts across the U.S. The event's continued focus on customer choice in beneficiary selection will likely empower consumers and reinforce their participation in charitable giving. Future iterations may see an expansion of national and local charity partners, further broadening the event's reach and impact on communities nationwide.
Beyond the Headlines
The 'Share the Love' Event transcends a typical sales promotion, embodying a deeper shift in consumer expectations and corporate ethics. It illustrates how businesses can move beyond traditional advertising to create a narrative of shared values and community engagement. This model challenges the conventional view of corporate giving as a separate, often token, activity, instead integrating it into the core business operation. The event's emphasis on quantifiable impact—such as animals supported or meals delivered—provides tangible evidence of its effectiveness, fostering greater trust and transparency with the public. This approach could contribute to a broader cultural expectation for companies to demonstrate genuine social responsibility, influencing consumer behavior and potentially driving a more ethical marketplace in the U.S.
