What's Happening?
A new national network of state coalitions has been launched to support Community Development Financial Institutions (CDFIs), including credit unions. This initiative aims to enhance public policy advocacy, attract more capital, and expand lending in underserved
communities across the U.S. The Network of State CDFI Coalitions, announced on October 30, brings together leaders from statewide organizations that represent mission-driven lenders serving urban, rural, and Native communities. The goal is to foster collaboration among state coalitions, share effective policy strategies, and increase the influence of CDFIs in economic development and financial access decisions. Opportunity Finance Network (OFN), a national organization representing nearly 500 CDFIs, is a key partner, providing support through conference programming and federal advocacy. Senator Mike Crapo (R-Idaho), co-chair of the Senate Community Development Finance Caucus, expressed his support, stating that CDFIs drive economic growth in rural and underserved areas and that stronger state policies and partnerships will help these institutions address local financial needs more effectively.
Why It's Important?
This new network is significant because it aims to strengthen the financial infrastructure for underserved communities, which often lack access to mainstream financial services. By enhancing state-level advocacy and collaboration, CDFIs can secure more funding and implement policies that directly benefit small businesses, affordable housing, and community development projects. The bipartisan support from senators like Mike Crapo highlights a recognition of CDFIs' crucial role in fostering economic equity. Increased capital and expanded lending by CDFIs can lead to job creation, neighborhood revitalization, and broader economic opportunities in areas traditionally overlooked by larger financial institutions. This initiative also helps CDFIs diversify their funding sources, reducing their reliance on federal support and making them more resilient to changes in national policy. Ultimately, it seeks to empower local communities by providing them with the financial tools necessary for sustainable growth and development.
What's Next?
The Network of State CDFI Coalitions is expected to continue building on its foundational work, which has been ongoing since 2023. Future steps include facilitating more webinars focused on state coalition development and advocacy, briefing congressional caucuses on the importance of community development finance, and supporting the growth of additional emerging state coalitions. The network will work to help state coalitions pursue stronger state policies, develop new funding partnerships, and expand the availability of affordable credit for small businesses, housing, and community development projects. This increased emphasis on state-level advocacy is anticipated to lead to more localized funding initiatives, similar to Michigan's recent approval of a $10 million loan to its CDFI Coalition. The network aims to give state organizations a stronger collective voice and help community lenders broaden their reach, contributing to OFN's goals of stronger capitalization, expanded partnerships, and greater policy influence for its members through 2030.
