Slate, the manufacturer of an upcoming electric pickup truck, has decided to change the battery technology for its 2027 production models. Originally, the trucks were to be equipped with nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) battery packs. However, Slate has opted
for a more cost-effective lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery sourced from China's Gotion. This decision follows the removal of a $7,500 tax credit for electric vehicles, which previously restricted the use of batteries containing materials from 'foreign entities of concern,' including China. The LFP batteries are approximately 40% cheaper than NMC batteries due to the lower cost of iron compared to cobalt or nickel. The new battery offers a capacity of 65 kWh, with a usable capacity of 63 kWh, powering a 181-horsepower motor. The truck is priced at $26,400, which is higher than the initial pre-tax credit price but remains competitive.
