What's Happening?
KRA Consultancy Ltd, a Manchester-based company, has been fined £300,000 by the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) for sending over 5.5 million unsolicited marketing texts. These texts, sent between April 2022 and May 2025, included fake bailiff
messages designed to frighten recipients into engaging with the company's debt services. The ICO's investigation revealed that the company targeted individuals in financial difficulty, exploiting their vulnerability with high-pressure marketing tactics. The investigation also uncovered internal communications that used 'coaching' as a euphemism for threats. The ICO has issued an Enforcement Notice, requiring KRA to cease sending marketing messages without consent within 30 days.
Why It's Important?
This case highlights the ongoing issue of companies exploiting vulnerable individuals through unlawful marketing practices. The significant fine imposed on KRA Consultancy Ltd serves as a warning to other companies that such practices will not be tolerated. The ICO's actions underscore the importance of protecting consumers from deceptive and aggressive marketing tactics, particularly those who are already in financial distress. This enforcement action may lead to increased scrutiny of marketing practices across industries, potentially prompting companies to review and improve their compliance with data protection and marketing laws.
