What's Happening?
The International Trade Centre (ITC), a joint agency of the United Nations and World Trade Organization, has launched the Women Exporters in the Digital Economy (WEIDE) Fund in February 2024. This initiative aims to empower women entrepreneurs by facilitating
their business growth through international trade and digitalization. The WEIDE Fund, with a capital of USD 50 million, seeks to address the finance gap faced by women-led small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) by providing grants and support from financial institutions. It also offers technical assistance and training in digital skills and export competitiveness, connects women to digital market platforms, and fosters inclusive business ecosystems through strategic partnerships with private and public sectors. The ITC's broader mission is to enable small business export success in developing and transition-economy countries by providing sustainable and inclusive development solutions to the private sector, trade support institutions, and policymakers.
Why It's Important?
The WEIDE Fund is crucial for promoting gender equality and economic empowerment on a global scale, aligning with the UN Global Goals for Sustainable Development. By focusing on women entrepreneurs, the initiative addresses systemic barriers that often limit their participation in international trade and the digital economy. Empowering women in business can lead to significant economic benefits, including job creation, increased household incomes, and broader economic development in their communities and countries. The fund's emphasis on digitalization is particularly important in the current global landscape, as digital platforms offer unprecedented opportunities for SMEs to access international markets. This initiative also highlights the role of international organizations like the ITC in fostering inclusive trade practices and supporting vulnerable economic groups.
What's Next?
The WEIDE Fund will focus on developing and implementing proactive partnership strategies to identify and engage organizations that can provide tangible growth opportunities for WEIDE SMEs in target countries such as Mongolia, Nigeria, Jordan, and the Dominican Republic. This will involve leading partnership outreach, negotiations, and follow-up to secure commitments and activities for SMEs. The fund will also facilitate targeted introductions and referrals between WEIDE-supported SMEs and relevant partners, experts, financial institutions, buyers, and digital platforms. Day-to-day management and coordination of international and country-level partnerships will be crucial, along with leveraging National Advisory Group members as strategic partners. The ITC will continue to track partnerships and engage with supported SMEs to maintain an active and opportunity-driven business community.
Beyond the Headlines
The WEIDE Fund's approach extends beyond direct financial and technical support by aiming to reshape the broader ecosystem for women entrepreneurs. By fostering strategic alliances and leveraging existing networks, the initiative seeks to create a more supportive and inclusive environment for women in international trade. This includes addressing not only economic barriers but also potentially cultural and social challenges that women face in business. The focus on digitalization also implies a long-term shift towards more resilient and adaptable business models, preparing women entrepreneurs for future economic landscapes. The success of such initiatives could serve as a model for other development programs, demonstrating the profound impact of targeted support for marginalized groups in global commerce.
