What's Happening?
Steppenwolf Theatre's production of Branden Jacobs-Jenkins's play 'Purpose' is scheduled to transfer to London's Royal Court Theatre in January. This marks a significant return for Steppenwolf to a British venue, with the last London appearance being
Tracy Letts's 'August: Osage County' in 2008 at the National Theatre. 'Purpose' is a play loosely inspired by the family of the late Chicago civil rights leader Rev. Jesse Jackson. The upcoming London run is being billed as a transfer of the acclaimed Broadway production, which featured some cast members not present in the 2024 Chicago premiere. Steppenwolf co-artistic director Glenn Davis and ensemble members Alena Arenas and Jon Michael Hill will travel with the show to the Royal Court, along with the original, mostly Chicago-based, creative team. Before its London debut, the production will also travel to the Geffen Playhouse in Los Angeles and is currently rehearsing in Chicago.
Why It's Important?
The transfer of 'Purpose' to London's Royal Court Theatre is important for several reasons within the theater world. It signifies a continued international presence for American regional theater, particularly for a renowned institution like Steppenwolf, known for its ensemble-driven and often edgy productions. This move reintroduces the 'Steppenwolf and the Chicago theater brand' to British audiences, potentially fostering new collaborations and cultural exchanges between the U.S. and U.K. theater scenes. For the play itself, a London run at a prestigious venue like the Royal Court, known for premiering new and ambitious works, elevates its profile and reach. It also provides an opportunity for a wider international audience to engage with a story that draws inspiration from significant American civil rights history, offering a unique cultural perspective. The involvement of key Steppenwolf personnel and the original creative team ensures the artistic integrity of the production is maintained across its various venues.
What's Next?
Following its current rehearsals in Chicago, 'Purpose' is slated to first travel to the Geffen Playhouse in Los Angeles before making its way to London's Royal Court Theatre in January. The Royal Court's 2027 season will also feature other notable productions, including the world premiere of 'The Apology' by V (formerly Eve Ensler) and 'The Briar Patch' by Ciara Elizabeth Smyth, starring Juliet Stevenson. The transfer of 'Purpose' is expected to be a significant event for both Steppenwolf Theatre and the Royal Court, potentially leading to increased visibility and critical acclaim for the production on an international stage. The presence of Steppenwolf's co-artistic director and ensemble members suggests a strong commitment to ensuring the quality and authenticity of the Chicago theater experience for London audiences. This international exposure could also open doors for future collaborations and tours for other American theatrical works.
