What's Happening?
Farida Mahdy, an Egyptian photographer, has embarked on a project to document the stylish fashion sense of her grandmother, Ehsan Ouf, during the 1970s and 1980s. Inspired by her grandmother's glamorous lifestyle, Mahdy began the project titled 'Grandma
and the Fur Coat' in 2024. The project showcases Ouf's celebrity-like fashion, featuring brands such as Chanel and Dior, and her unique habit of matching cigarette colors to her outfits. Mahdy's work not only highlights her grandmother's past style but also reflects on the passage of time and the changes in her grandmother's life since the death of her grandfather. The project is a tribute to her grandmother's elegance and a continuation of her late grandfather's legacy, who was also passionate about photography.
Why It's Important?
This project by Farida Mahdy underscores the cultural and historical significance of personal fashion as a form of self-expression and identity. By documenting her grandmother's style, Mahdy preserves a piece of cultural history that reflects broader societal trends in Egypt during the 70s and 80s. The project also highlights the role of photography in capturing and preserving personal and familial histories, offering insights into the lives of women in the Middle East. Additionally, it emphasizes the importance of intergenerational relationships and the impact of family legacies on personal and professional pursuits.
