A new study from South Korea, presented at the European Society of Cardiology annual meeting, indicates that moderately increasing sleep on weekends may be linked to a lower likelihood of high blood pressure. The research analyzed data from 40,727 adults,
comparing weekday and weekend sleep durations. It found that weekend catch-up sleep was associated with a 6% lower likelihood of high blood pressure after adjusting for other factors. Among physically inactive participants, this association was slightly stronger, showing a 7% lower likelihood. The study observed a U-shaped pattern, with the lowest likelihood of high blood pressure among those who added one to two hours of sleep on weekends. However, the beneficial association weakened with longer periods of catch-up sleep. While the study suggests moderate weekend sleep can be beneficial, researchers caution against excessive catch-up sleep, which could disrupt regular sleep patterns.
