What's Happening?
South Africa's largest e-commerce company, Takealot Group, has reported its first-ever full-year adjusted operating profit after nearly 15 years since its inception. The company, which is a subsidiary of Naspers, achieved an adjusted earnings before interest
and tax of $11 million for the year ending March 31, 2026, compared to a $13 million loss the previous year. This financial turnaround is attributed to a 19% increase in group revenue, reaching $1 billion, driven by stronger order growth, improved margins, and expansion in its logistics business. Takealot.com, the group's general merchandise marketplace, played a significant role in this success, generating $906 million in revenue. The company has also focused on its logistics infrastructure, with Takealot Fulfilment Solutions recording a 93.5% year-on-year revenue growth.
Why It's Important?
The profitability milestone for Takealot Group is significant as it highlights the company's ability to maintain its market leadership in South Africa's increasingly competitive e-commerce sector, especially with the entry of global giant Amazon. This development underscores the importance of scale, efficient logistics, and customer engagement in the e-commerce industry. The success of Takealot's subscription service, TakealotMORE, which contributed 27% of gross merchandise value, demonstrates the growing consumer preference for value-added services. The company's strategic focus on logistics as a standalone revenue stream could set a precedent for other e-commerce businesses looking to diversify their income sources.
What's Next?
Takealot Group plans to scale its logistics business, Takealot Fulfilment Solutions, as a standalone revenue stream, serving external customers across South Africa. This move is expected to further strengthen the company's market position and provide additional revenue opportunities. As the e-commerce landscape continues to evolve, Takealot's ability to adapt and innovate will be crucial in maintaining its competitive edge against both local and international rivals.
