A two-year randomized trial, known as the Walnuts and Healthy Aging (WAHA) trial, investigated the impact of daily walnut consumption on the dietary inflammatory index (DII) of older adults. The study involved 319 healthy individuals with an average age of 69,
with 66% being women. Participants were divided into two groups: one consumed 1 to 2 ounces of walnuts daily (approximately 15% of their caloric intake), while the control group avoided walnuts and limited other nuts to less than two servings per week. Both groups maintained their usual diets otherwise. Researchers collected five 24-hour food recalls throughout the trial to calculate each participant's DII, which estimates the inflammatory potential of a diet based on its nutritional composition.
