What's Happening?
The 11th MOLDOX International Documentary Film Festival is scheduled to take place in Chișinău from November 25 to 29, 2026. This year's festival is organized around the theme "Coexist?" and will feature approximately 50 international and national films,
including features and shorts from Sundance and San Sebastián lineups, as well as Oscar-winning titles and Moldovan documentaries. A significant highlight of this edition is the first retrospective in the festival's history, dedicated to the French New Wave director Agnès Varda. The festival, founded in 2016 by the MOLDOX Association, aims to be Moldova’s largest platform for documentary filmmaking focused on social change, human rights, and social justice. In addition to screenings, the event will include Q&A sessions with filmmakers, the Green Vine National Competition for Moldova-born filmmakers, and the MOLDOX Lab, an intensive training program for filmmakers and aspiring editors.
Why It's Important?
The MOLDOX Documentary Festival's dedication to social change through film highlights the growing role of cinema in addressing critical societal issues. By focusing on human rights and social justice, the festival provides a platform for diverse voices and perspectives, fostering dialogue and understanding. The inclusion of a retrospective for Agnès Varda, a pioneering figure in the French New Wave, underscores the festival's commitment to cinematic artistry and historical recognition. This not only enriches the cultural landscape but also educates audiences on the evolution and impact of documentary filmmaking. The MOLDOX Lab further contributes to the industry by nurturing new talent and promoting international collaboration, which can lead to the development of impactful films that resonate globally.
What's Next?
The festival will continue with its scheduled screenings, discussion panels, and the MOLDOX Lab until November 29, 2026. The full program and ticket information are expected to be released in the first weeks of November. Following the festival, the MOLDOX Association will likely assess the impact of this year's theme and programming, particularly the success of the Agnès Varda retrospective and the MOLDOX Lab. The outcomes of the Green Vine National Competition and the Audience Award will also be announced, potentially elevating the profiles of emerging filmmakers. The festival's ongoing commitment to social change suggests future editions will continue to explore relevant themes and support the documentary film community.
Beyond the Headlines
The MOLDOX festival's emphasis on social change and human rights through documentary film reflects a broader global trend where art is increasingly used as a tool for advocacy and education. By creating a space for reflection on coexistence, the festival encourages critical thinking about contemporary challenges and promotes empathy across diverse communities. The focus on training and collaboration through the MOLDOX Lab also addresses the need for sustainable growth within the documentary film industry, ensuring that new generations of filmmakers are equipped to tell compelling stories. This initiative contributes to the preservation of cultural heritage and the development of a more informed and engaged citizenry, both locally and internationally.
