Leaders from the University of Iowa Tippie College of Business and the Vaughan Institute of Risk Management & Insurance are proposing the establishment of an Iowa AI Center of Excellence in downtown Des Moines. This initiative aims to create an innovation
platform specifically for the insurance industry, with the goal of expediting the adoption of advanced AI technology. Jim Lewis, executive director of the Vaughan Institute, stated that the center will help insurance companies improve their operations, enhance customer experience, boost productivity and profitability, and address talent shortages by making their workforce more productive. The University of Iowa, the Tippie College of Business, and the Vaughan Institute are collaborating with Plug and Play, a global innovation platform based in Silicon Valley, to bring this AI center to fruition. The project leaders are currently engaged in fundraising efforts and seeking partnerships with insurance companies to secure the necessary capital for the center's launch.

Project leaders are actively raising capital, and the timeline for launching the center, potentially as early as January, depends on the progress of these fundraising efforts. Once launched, the center plans to host cohorts of AI companies, with a goal of bringing 15 companies to Des Moines twice a year for six- to ten-week programs to meet with partner insurance carriers and brokers. This will facilitate direct collaboration and the implementation of commercially ready AI solutions. The center also aims to leverage the educational opportunities provided by the University of Iowa, creating a full-cycle innovation platform where companies, faculty, and startups can learn from each other. The success of this model, which has been implemented in other markets, suggests a potential for significant acceleration of AI adoption and innovation within the U.S. insurance industry.
