What's Happening?
DAZN, a global sports entertainment platform, has announced its acquisition of EverPass Media, a company specializing in distributing licensed sports properties to commercial establishments such as bars, hotels, and restaurants. This acquisition is a strategic
move to accelerate DAZN's expansion in the U.S. market and will lead to EverPass Media being rebranded as DAZN for Business. EverPass Media was founded in 2023 by 32 Equity, the strategic investment arm of the NFL, and RedBird Capital Partners, both of whom, along with TKO Group Holdings, will become minority shareholders in DAZN. EverPass holds exclusive commercial distribution rights for NFL Sunday Ticket, which includes all live out-of-market Sunday regular-season afternoon NFL games. Additionally, EverPass provides access to content from major sports leagues and competitions, including the English Premier League, UEFA Champions League, MLB, NBA, WNBA, NWSL, NASCAR, PGA TOUR, MLS, Formula 1, and college football and basketball. The platform also has distribution partnerships with streaming services like Peacock, Netflix, Paramount, and Apple, as well as regional sports networks like YES Network and Chicago Sports Network. This move follows DAZN's recent efforts to expand its direct-to-consumer U.S. sports offerings, including partnerships with Top Rank Boxing and Premier Boxing Champions, and exclusive deals with NBA teams like the Timberwolves and Pacers.
Why It's Important?
This acquisition is a significant development for DAZN, transforming its presence in the U.S. sports market from primarily a combat sports and soccer-centric platform to a comprehensive provider for both individual consumers and commercial venues. By integrating EverPass Media, DAZN gains immediate scale in the commercial distribution sector, leveraging EverPass's established relationships across U.S. venues and its portfolio of premium sports rights, including the highly sought-after NFL Sunday Ticket. This allows DAZN to serve a broader spectrum of sports fans, from those watching at home via the DAZN app to patrons in commercial establishments. The deal also signifies a broader trend in sports media, where content is increasingly moving to streaming platforms, and businesses are seeking modern solutions for content delivery. The involvement of RedBird Capital Partners, 32 Equity, and TKO Group Holdings as minority shareholders in DAZN underscores the strategic value and potential growth recognized by key players in the sports and investment sectors. This expansion positions DAZN to play a more substantial role in the U.S. sports market, which is one of the largest and most valuable globally.
What's Next?
Following the acquisition, EverPass Media will be rebranded as DAZN for Business, with Alex Kaplan, the current CEO of EverPass, continuing to lead the business and taking on an expanded role within DAZN. Existing EverPass customers are assured of uninterrupted service. DAZN plans to invest in expanding the platform's capabilities, content offerings, and geographic reach, aiming to establish it as a leading global technology and distribution platform for premium sports in commercial venues. This suggests a continued focus on enhancing the IP-based technology platform that EverPass developed, which is designed to simplify the transition from traditional satellite and cable distribution to streaming for commercial venues. The integration of EverPass's technology will serve as the operational foundation for DAZN for Business, indicating a long-term strategy to modernize commercial sports content delivery. DAZN is also expected to announce additional direct-to-consumer deals with more NBA teams, further solidifying its consumer-facing presence in the U.S. market.
Beyond the Headlines
The acquisition of EverPass Media by DAZN highlights a significant shift in how sports content is consumed and distributed, particularly in commercial settings. The move from traditional satellite and cable to IP-based streaming for venues like bars and restaurants reflects a broader technological evolution in media. This transition offers commercial venues greater flexibility and control over content delivery, potentially enhancing the viewing experience for customers and providing new avenues for engagement. For sports rights holders, this platform offers a scalable and secure route into the commercial market, adapting to changing consumer habits. The deal also underscores the increasing convergence of direct-to-consumer and commercial distribution strategies within the sports media landscape. As DAZN expands its global footprint through this acquisition, it could set a precedent for how premium sports content is packaged and delivered worldwide, influencing future negotiations for sports broadcasting rights and the technological infrastructure supporting them. The involvement of major investment firms and sports entities as shareholders also suggests a collective belief in the long-term viability and growth of this integrated streaming model.
