The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has issued the federal permit for the construction of the Louisiana International Terminal (LIT) in St. Bernard Parish, as announced by the Port of New Orleans. This $1.8 billion public-private investment project aims
to build a new container ship port 17 miles downriver from New Orleans, near Violet. The Port of New Orleans submitted its permit application in December 2021, followed by extensive environmental and engineering reviews, including three public notices in 2022 and 2024. Port of New Orleans President and CEO Beth Branch stated that this permit signifies a significant step forward after years of planning and partnership. Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry also emphasized the project's national importance for economic growth and global trade. The terminal is projected to open in 2028 and is expected to handle between 180,000-280,000 containers in its first year, with an anticipated maximum annual capacity of 1.2 million containers within 25 years. The project is a collaboration between Port NOLA, Terminal Investment Limited (TiL), and Ports America.
