American Airlines is set to expand its long-haul network from Chicago O'Hare International Airport (ORD) by reintroducing a year-round service to Tokyo Narita (NRT) starting March 27, 2027. This marks the airline's return to the U.S.-Japan market from its Midwest
hub after a seven-year hiatus. The route will be operated daily using Boeing 787-9 aircraft, enhancing American's transpacific joint business with Japan Airlines (JAL). This service will provide onward connections beyond Narita to destinations such as Bangkok, Ho Chi Minh City, Singapore, and Taipei. The reintroduction of this route is part of American's strategy to strengthen its hub in Chicago and broaden customer choices, as stated by American CEO Robert Isom. The airline had previously suspended the Chicago-Narita route in January 2020.
