A recent LinkedIn study reveals that Millennials and Gen Z are disproportionately securing fast-growing, high-paying jobs in the artificial intelligence (AI) sector, despite facing higher unemployment rates in the broader job market. The study, which
analyzed LinkedIn platform data, identified the top 12 fast-growing AI jobs, defining them as 'AI engineering and technology-building roles.' Gen Z workers constitute over two-thirds of new hires for individual contributor roles such as forward deployed engineer and AI engineer, with median annual salaries of $199,000 and $166,000, respectively. Millennials account for 60% of new hires for head of AI roles, which offer a median pay of $236,000. This trend occurs while the unemployment rate for young workers aged 22 to 27 was 7.2% in June, compared to 4.1% for all workers, according to data from the U.S. Census Bureau and U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The number of AI job postings on LinkedIn increased by 156% between 2024 and 2025, following a 14% increase between 2023 and 2024.
