What's Happening?
OWN (Oprah Winfrey Network) has released a new documentary titled "We Belong Here: The Story of Team Dream." The film chronicles the journey of 12 Black women who formed the first all-Black women's professional volleyball team in 2018. Despite limited
practice time, the team, led by NCAA champion Haley Eckerman, competed in the USA Women’s Volleyball Championship. The documentary emphasizes the athletes' experiences, challenges, and triumphs, told entirely through their own voices without an external narrator. Tina Perry, president of OWN, stated that the team's unity reflects their power, joy, and unwavering belief in one another, embodying the spirit of OWN Spotlight. The film premiered at the Martha’s Vineyard African American Film Festival and is now available on OWN’s digital and streaming platforms, including HBO Max, Discovery+, WatchOWN.tv, and connected TVs.
Why It's Important?
This documentary is significant for its focus on representation and leadership within sports, particularly for Black women. It highlights a groundbreaking moment in professional volleyball, showcasing athletes who defied expectations and created a legacy in a sport where their representation has historically been limited. The film provides a platform for these women to share their stories, offering insights into the challenges and motivations that fueled their historic achievement. By spotlighting Team Dream, OWN contributes to a broader conversation about diversity and inclusion in athletics, inspiring future generations of Black women athletes and demonstrating the power of collective strength and determination. The availability on major streaming platforms ensures wide accessibility, amplifying its message and impact.
What's Next?
The documentary's release on various streaming platforms, including HBO Max and Discovery+, suggests continued viewership and discussion around the themes of representation and empowerment in sports. Its presence on these platforms will likely extend its reach to a diverse audience, potentially sparking further interest in women's professional volleyball and the stories of underrepresented athletes. The film's impact may also encourage other media outlets to produce similar content, further diversifying the narratives presented in sports documentaries. The ongoing availability of "We Belong Here" will allow for sustained engagement with its message, potentially influencing future initiatives aimed at promoting diversity and inclusion in athletic fields.
Beyond the Headlines
Beyond the immediate narrative of Team Dream's athletic achievement, the documentary delves into deeper societal implications regarding race, gender, and opportunity in sports. It implicitly challenges existing structures that may limit the participation and visibility of Black women in professional athletics. By allowing the athletes to narrate their own experiences, the film fosters a more authentic understanding of their journey, moving beyond superficial portrayals. This approach not only celebrates their success but also underscores the importance of self-representation and agency. The documentary serves as a cultural artifact, documenting a pivotal moment in sports history and contributing to the ongoing dialogue about equity and social justice within the athletic community and beyond.
