What's Happening?
Damen Shipyards Group has entered into a contract with Seaspan ULC for the delivery of two ASD Tugs 2813. The agreement was finalized on May 19 at the International Tug and Salvage (ITS) Convention in Gothenburg, Sweden. This marks the first time Damen Tugs will
be part of the Seaspan fleet, although the two companies have a history of collaboration, including the delivery of hybrid-LNG ferries to Seaspan Ferries in 2021. The new tugs will be operated under the HaiSea Marine partnership, a joint venture between Seaspan and the Haisla Nation. The ASD Tug 2813 is designed for safety and efficiency, featuring a bollard pull of up to 70 tonnes and a wide beam for stability. The vessels will be constructed at Damen Song Cam Shipyard in Vietnam and are expected to be delivered in the fourth quarter of next year.
Why It's Important?
This contract signifies a strengthening of the relationship between Damen Shipyards Group and Seaspan ULC, highlighting their shared commitment to environmental stewardship and innovation in maritime operations. The introduction of the ASD Tugs 2813 into the Seaspan fleet is expected to enhance operational capabilities, particularly in the challenging environments of British Columbia's west coast. The partnership with the Haisla Nation also underscores the importance of indigenous collaboration in regional maritime projects, potentially setting a precedent for future ventures. The tugs' advanced design and capabilities could lead to increased efficiency and safety in maritime operations, benefiting both the companies involved and the broader maritime industry.
What's Next?
Following the delivery of the tugs, Damen's local presence in British Columbia, through its Service Hub in Vancouver, will enable rapid response and support for Seaspan's operations. This local support is crucial for maintaining the operational readiness and efficiency of the new tugs. The successful integration of these vessels into the Seaspan fleet could lead to further collaborations between Damen and Seaspan, potentially expanding their joint ventures in other regions or with additional maritime technologies. The focus on environmental stewardship may also drive future innovations in sustainable maritime solutions.
