What's Happening?
A new Target store officially opened in Brookings on July 26, located within the Brookings Marketplace at 801 Lefevre Drive. The grand opening was met with a strong community response and included entertainment such as a DJ and performances by the SDSU
Pride of the Dakotas marching band. A soft opening was also held for President Barry Dunn and Mayor Ope Niemeyer. The store offers a wide range of products, including groceries, household essentials, clothing, electronics, beauty products, and seasonal items. According to LeeAnn Hokenson, Target executive team lead, the store aims to make shopping easier for guests and bring joy to their daily lives. The new Target has also created numerous job opportunities for residents, contributing to the local economy and Brookings' continued growth.
Why It's Important?
The opening of Target in Brookings significantly enhances the retail landscape for both residents and students of South Dakota State University (SDSU). Previously, many residents and students had to travel 45 minutes to Sioux Falls or Watertown, or rely on online orders, to access Target products. The new store provides a convenient, local option for essential goods, school supplies, and other items, saving time and travel costs. This is particularly beneficial for SDSU students, as highlighted by student Macy Bryant and parent Amanda Starzl, who noted the ease of preparing for the school year. Beyond convenience, the store's presence contributes to the local economy by creating new jobs and increasing local spending, which can stimulate further business development in the area. The store's 'Game-Day Ready' section with SDSU apparel also caters specifically to the university community, fostering local pride and engagement.
What's Next?
The new Target store is expected to continue attracting a diverse customer base, from college students to families. LeeAnn Hokenson indicated that the store is actively seeking part-time employees for various positions, including fulfillment, receiving, sales floor, and Drive Up, suggesting ongoing job opportunities for the community. The store's strategic location and comprehensive product offerings are likely to solidify its role as a key retail destination in Brookings. As the academic year progresses, the store will likely see continued high traffic from SDSU students and their families. The success of this new retail venture could potentially encourage other national retailers to consider establishing a presence in Brookings, further diversifying the local economy and enhancing shopping options for residents.
Beyond the Headlines
The arrival of a major retail chain like Target in a smaller city like Brookings often signifies more than just new shopping options; it can be a marker of economic vitality and growth. Such developments can influence local real estate values, attract new residents, and even impact the competitive landscape for existing local businesses. The convenience offered to university students could also play a role in student retention and satisfaction, making the city more appealing for higher education. Furthermore, the creation of numerous jobs, even part-time, can provide valuable employment experience for students and contribute to the overall economic stability of the community. This event underscores the evolving retail strategies of large corporations, which are increasingly looking to expand into smaller, underserved markets with strong community anchors like universities.
