What's Happening?
Samsung Electronics has announced the creation of a new robotics division, named RX or Robotics eXperience, as part of its strategy to expand into physical AI. This move is part of a broader effort by the South Korean tech giant to find new growth avenues.
The division will be directly overseen by CEO TM Roh and aims to consolidate Samsung's robotics capabilities, focusing on the development and commercialization of core technologies. Samsung plans to invest approximately 60 trillion won ($40.7 billion) in the Yeongnam region, with a significant portion allocated to developing physical AI infrastructure and humanoid robot manufacturing facilities. The new unit will also establish research bases in the U.S., China, and Japan.
Why It's Important?
Samsung's foray into robotics and physical AI represents a strategic shift as the company seeks to diversify its business and reduce reliance on traditional electronics markets. The establishment of the RX division highlights the growing importance of robotics and AI in the tech industry, with potential applications across various sectors, including manufacturing, healthcare, and consumer electronics. This move could position Samsung as a leader in the emerging field of physical AI, potentially driving innovation and competition. The investment in robotics also reflects a broader trend among tech companies to explore AI-driven solutions, which could have significant implications for the future of work and automation.
