What's Happening?
The Book Industry Study Group (BISG) and BookNet Canada have initiated their second annual survey on AI usage within the North American book industry. This survey aims to gather insights from publishing professionals and librarians about their experiences,
concerns, and expectations regarding AI. The survey, which is open until July 17, seeks to build on the findings from the previous year, which highlighted a mix of cautious optimism and concerns about AI's impact on the industry. The 2025 survey revealed that while AI adoption is increasing, many in the industry remain wary of its implications, particularly regarding copyright, ethics, and job impacts.
Why It's Important?
The survey's findings are crucial for understanding how AI is reshaping the publishing landscape in North America. As AI becomes more integrated into publishing processes, it presents both opportunities and challenges. The industry stands to benefit from AI's potential to streamline operations and enhance content creation. However, there are significant concerns about the ethical use of AI, its impact on employment, and the reliability of AI-generated content. The survey results will provide valuable data to guide industry stakeholders in navigating these challenges and leveraging AI effectively.
What's Next?
Following the survey, BISG and BookNet Canada plan to release a comprehensive report detailing the findings. This report will be made publicly available and is expected to inform future strategies for AI integration in the publishing industry. Stakeholders, including publishers, librarians, and technology providers, will likely use the insights to address the concerns raised and explore new opportunities for AI application. The ongoing dialogue around AI in publishing is expected to continue, with a focus on balancing innovation with ethical considerations.
