What's Happening?
The Iraq National Trade and Investment Forum (INTF) 2026, co-organized by the Government of Iraq, the Federation of Iraqi Chambers of Commerce, and supported by the European Union and implemented by the International Trade Centre (ITC), recently concluded
in Baghdad. The forum, themed 'Iraq–EU Partnership in Trade and Investment for Iraq’s Economic Transformation,' brought together over 750 registrations from businesses, government institutions, and development partners, including approximately 50 companies from the European Union. The event facilitated business-to-business meetings, connecting Iraqi businesses with potential buyers, suppliers, investors, and technology partners in sectors such as agrifood, construction, renewable energy, manufacturing, logistics, and digital services. The forum also served as a platform for dialogue on Iraq’s National Trade and Investment Strategy (NTIS), aiming to improve the business environment and attract investment.
Why It's Important?
This initiative is crucial for Iraq's economic diversification and private sector growth, especially amidst global trade shifts. By strengthening commercial ties with the European Union, Iraq can access European know-how, finance, and markets, which are vital for its post-conflict reconstruction and economic stability. The forum's focus on small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) highlights their potential to meet both domestic and international demand, fostering job creation and economic inclusion. For European companies, it offers opportunities to tap into the emerging Iraqi market. The policy dialogue on WTO accession and trade reforms signals Iraq's commitment to integrating into the global economy, which could lead to a more predictable and attractive investment climate. The estimated €7.2 million in business opportunities facilitated since the forum's inception demonstrates its tangible impact on trade and investment.
What's Next?
The Ministry of Trade of Iraq has pledged to follow up on the forum's outcomes and agreements, working with relevant authorities to remove obstacles for companies doing business in Iraq. Preparatory work for Iraq’s National Trade and Investment Strategy (NTIS) is underway, aiming to bring government and the private sector together to identify priorities for improving the business environment. The forum's continued focus on policy discussions, including WTO accession and investment reforms, suggests ongoing efforts to create a more favorable trade and investment landscape. Future editions of the INTF are expected to build on the success of combining business-to-business meetings with policy dialogue, further solidifying Iraq-EU commercial ties and supporting Iraq's economic transformation.
Beyond the Headlines
The INTF's success in fostering business connections and policy dialogue extends beyond immediate trade deals. It signifies a broader commitment to rebuilding and integrating Iraq into the global economy through sustainable partnerships. The emphasis on showcasing Iraqi products and supporting enterprise growth, including through initiatives like the 'By Iraqi Hands' supermarket, promotes national pride and local economic empowerment. Recognizing business achievements through awards further incentivizes innovation and best practices within the Iraqi private sector. This collaborative approach, involving international organizations like the ITC and the EU, underscores the importance of multilateral cooperation in driving economic development and stability in regions undergoing significant transformation.
