What's Happening?
Belmont University's Bonnaroo U class, a collaboration between Drs. Sarita Stewart and Ken Spring, provides students with hands-on experience in the music festival industry. This program, now in its eighth year, allows students to conduct research and gather
insights at the Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival in Manchester, TN. The students engage in over 300 interviews with festival attendees and industry professionals, providing valuable data to Live Nation, the festival's organizer. This experiential learning opportunity is part of the students' final project, replacing traditional exams or papers. The insights gathered help inform future festival planning, offering a deeper understanding of fan experiences.
Why It's Important?
The partnership between Belmont University and Live Nation highlights the importance of integrating academic learning with real-world industry experience. By involving students in the festival's planning process, Live Nation gains fresh perspectives and data that are difficult to obtain through traditional research methods. This collaboration not only enhances the students' educational experience but also contributes to the festival's success by aligning it more closely with attendee preferences. The program serves as a model for other universities, demonstrating the value of experiential learning in preparing students for careers in the entertainment industry.
What's Next?
Following the festival, students present their findings to Live Nation, offering recommendations for future events. These presentations include suggestions on artist lineups, communication methods, and festival logistics. The insights provided by the students are expected to influence the planning and execution of future Bonnaroo festivals, ensuring they remain relevant and engaging for attendees. The ongoing collaboration between Belmont University and Live Nation is likely to continue, with potential expansions to similar programs at other institutions.
