Clemson University automotive engineering students, in collaboration with BMW North America, have developed a solar-powered electric vehicle named Deep Orange 17, also known as the Luminetta. This vehicle is designed to generate more energy than it consumes
during everyday driving. The project was part of Clemson's Deep Orange program and was unveiled at the Clemson University International Center for Automotive Research. The Luminetta is a lightweight, solar-powered coupe aimed at urban drivers with a typical 12-mile commute. It features a frame made of structural steel, aluminum, and carbon fiber, and incorporates over 1,700 photovoltaic cells. The vehicle's design draws inspiration from BMW's design heritage while incorporating modern aerodynamic styling. The interior includes real-time telemetry and advanced computer technology, along with familiar interfaces like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
