What's Happening?
LIM College, a New York City-based institution specializing in the business of fashion, has announced a new inter-continental Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) degree program in Fashion Design and Business. This program, set to begin in Fall 2027,
is a collaboration with ESMOD Paris, a renowned French fashion school established in 1841. The unique four-year curriculum is designed to provide U.S.-based students with an immersive educational experience across two major fashion capitals: New York and Paris. Students will spend their first year at LIM College in New York, focusing on fashion business and completing an internship. The subsequent two years will be dedicated to fashion design studies at ESMOD Paris. For their final year, students will return to New York to complete advanced business courses, undertake another internship, and present their own capsule collection. The BBA degree will be awarded by LIM College. This initiative aims to cultivate fashion professionals who possess both strong design capabilities and global business acumen.
Why It's Important?
This new inter-continental degree program is significant for the U.S. fashion industry as it addresses a growing demand for professionals who can seamlessly integrate creative design with robust business and entrepreneurial skills. According to LIM College President Ron Marshall, the fashion industry increasingly requires individuals who are proficient in concept development, product creation, branding, marketing, finance, supply chain management, sustainability, and business strategy. By offering a curriculum that spans both New York, a hub for fashion commerce, and Paris, a center for fashion design, the program is poised to produce a new generation of leaders capable of navigating the complexities of the global fashion market. This collaboration could elevate the standard of fashion education in the U.S. by providing students with direct exposure to international practices and fostering a more globally competitive workforce. Graduates are expected to be prepared for diverse roles, from entry-level design positions to leadership roles and entrepreneurial ventures, thereby strengthening the talent pipeline for American fashion businesses.
What's Next?
Applications for the Fall 2027 admission to the LIM X ESMOD BBA program are currently being accepted. Prospective students will need to meet standard LIM College bachelor's degree admission requirements, maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA, and complete a creative concept exercise and an in-person interview. The program's curriculum will include specialized courses such as Patternmaking, Fashion Design, Digital Tools, AI: Creative Development & Research Tools, and Textiles and Eco-Sourcing at ESMOD, alongside Design & Merchandising Management, Product Development, and Marketing & the Global Consumer at LIM. Students will also receive French language instruction. The success of this program could influence other fashion education institutions to adopt similar inter-continental models, further globalizing fashion education and fostering a more interconnected industry. The first cohort of graduates, expected in 2031, will demonstrate the program's effectiveness in preparing students for a dynamic and evolving global fashion landscape.
Beyond the Headlines
The collaboration between LIM College and ESMOD Paris represents a deeper shift in how fashion education is perceived and delivered, moving beyond traditional geographical and disciplinary boundaries. This program acknowledges that the future of fashion is inherently global and requires a holistic understanding of both artistic creation and commercial viability. The integration of AI and digital tools into the curriculum highlights the industry's rapid technological evolution and the necessity for future professionals to be adept in these areas. Furthermore, the emphasis on sustainability and eco-sourcing reflects a growing ethical imperative within the fashion industry, pushing for more responsible practices. This inter-continental model could also foster greater cultural exchange and understanding among students, enriching their perspectives and preparing them to work in diverse international teams. The program's structure, which includes two required internships, underscores the importance of practical, real-world experience in a field that is constantly innovating and adapting.
