What's Happening?
Instructure, the creator of Canvas LMS, has partnered with Amazon Web Services (AWS) to develop AI-powered tools aimed at expanding learning access for underserved communities globally. This initiative is part of the AWS Education Equity Initiative, which
seeks to address barriers faced by under-resourced institutions that are still using outdated, on-premise systems. The collaboration will focus on making LMS migration more affordable and accessible, thereby enabling more learners to access modern educational infrastructure. Additionally, the initiative will enhance Canvas Career capabilities to support workforce development and continuing education, targeting adult learners and community colleges. The project aims to reach approximately 900,000 learners in its first year, with a goal of expanding to 5.4 million learners over four years.
Why It's Important?
This collaboration is significant as it addresses the digital divide in education, particularly for underserved communities that lack access to modern learning tools. By making LMS migration more affordable, the initiative could democratize access to quality education, thereby improving educational outcomes and workforce readiness. The focus on workforce development and continuing education aligns with the growing need for skills-based learning in today's job market. This initiative could potentially transform educational landscapes by providing scalable learning infrastructure and connecting learners to employment opportunities, thus fostering economic growth and reducing educational inequities.
What's Next?
Instructure and AWS plan to expand the tools launched today to reach more institutions and learners. The initiative will initially focus on the United States, Brazil, Mexico, and the United Kingdom, with plans to extend to additional regions. The success of this initiative will be measured by the number of learners reached and the impact on workforce outcomes, such as credential attainment and job placement. Instructure will report progress publicly, starting in the second half of 2026, to ensure transparency and accountability.
