What's Happening?
The L.A. Dance Project (LADP), founded by Benjamin Millepied, is inviting applications for its LAUNCH: LA residency program for 2026. This initiative is designed to support early-career, Los Angeles-based dance artists by providing them with studio space,
financial support, and a platform to showcase their work. The residency includes open rehearsals, Q&A sessions, and four fully produced performances at LADP's theater. The application deadline is July 10, 2026. Rachelle Rafailedes Mucha, the Director of the Artist Residency Program, emphasized the importance of this program in supporting emerging artists by removing financial and logistical barriers. The residency is open to artists from all dance backgrounds, with a focus on those from historically underrepresented groups.
Why It's Important?
The LAUNCH: LA residency is crucial for nurturing emerging dance talent in Los Angeles, a city known for its vibrant arts scene. By providing resources and a platform, LADP helps artists overcome common barriers such as funding and access to performance spaces. This support is particularly significant in the current environment where arts funding is limited. The program not only aids in the creation of new work but also helps artists build connections and gain exposure, potentially leading to further opportunities. The residency's focus on diversity ensures a wide range of artistic voices are heard, enriching the cultural landscape of Los Angeles.
What's Next?
As the application deadline approaches, LADP will review submissions to select participants for the 2026 residency. The selection committee, including Benjamin Millepied, will evaluate applications based on artistic merit and potential impact. Once selected, artists will begin their residency, culminating in performances that could attract attention from broader audiences and industry professionals. The success of the program could lead to its expansion, contingent on continued funding from organizations like the National Endowment for the Arts and private foundations.
Beyond the Headlines
The LAUNCH: LA residency not only supports the creation of new dance works but also fosters a collaborative environment where artists can experiment and innovate. By offering resources and mentorship, LADP encourages artists to push creative boundaries and explore interdisciplinary projects. This approach not only benefits the artists but also contributes to the evolution of contemporary dance, potentially influencing trends and practices within the broader dance community.
