A new study by the tech-focused executive search firm Christian & Timbers reveals a significant talent crunch within the U.S. tech industry, specifically concerning 'forward-deployed engineers' (FDEs) who can effectively implement artificial intelligence.
FDEs are customer-facing software engineers embedded within client environments to develop and deploy software, acting as a crucial bridge between AI labs and practical business applications. The study indicates that out of 17,000 FDEs currently working in the U.S., only 2,000 are considered 'Elite,' meaning they have consistently translated AI deployments into measurable returns on investment. This limited pool of elite FDEs poses a challenge for companies across all industries, including defense and government contractors, seeking to integrate AI into their workflows and achieve tangible results.
