NextEra Energy has received a federal loan of up to $1.9 billion from the U.S. Department of Energy and approval from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) to reconnect the Duane Arnold nuclear plant in Iowa to the electric grid. The plant,
located near Cedar Rapids, was shut down in 2020 for economic reasons. NextEra Energy aims to restart the plant by early 2029 and has already secured a 25-year electricity supply agreement with Google to support its cloud-computing and AI infrastructure in Iowa. The FERC approval allows Duane Arnold to reconnect, and NextEra's filings indicate an earliest restart date in the fourth quarter of 2028. The plant is expected to add over 600 megawatts of capacity, capable of serving more than 400,000 homes, with some estimates suggesting nearly 500,000 homes.
