What's Happening?
A new law in Maine mandates that employers with 10 or more employees must disclose pay ranges in all job advertisements. This legislation, known as LD 54, took effect on July 29, 2026, after being signed by Governor Janet Mills. The law applies to both
print and electronic job postings, including those by third parties. While commission-only jobs are exempt from specifying a pay range, they must indicate that compensation is commission-based. Employers with fewer than 10 employees are not required to disclose pay ranges but must provide current employees with pay range information upon request.
Why It's Important?
This law aims to promote transparency and fairness in the hiring process by providing job seekers with critical information upfront. It helps set realistic expectations for applicants and can aid in reducing wage disparities by promoting pay parity. For employers, this requirement may streamline the hiring process by attracting candidates who are already informed about potential compensation. The law reflects a growing trend towards greater transparency in employment practices, which could influence similar legislation in other states.
