What's Happening?
The Ottawa Charge, a team in the Professional Women's Hockey League (PWHL), will begin practicing and playing full-time at the Canadian Tire Centre (CTC) starting next season. This move was announced by Charge general manager Mike Hirshfeld during a press
conference. Previously, the Charge played at TD Place Arena but experienced significant fan turnout at CTC, averaging over 14,000 fans during one regular season and four playoff games. The partnership with the Ottawa Senators is set to deepen, with plans for a dedicated 'campus' at CTC, including exclusive locker rooms, lounges, and medical facilities for the Charge. Cyril Leeder, president and CEO of Senators Sports & Entertainment, emphasized the importance of this collaboration in the local hockey ecosystem.
Why It's Important?
This development is significant as it strengthens the presence of women's professional hockey in Ottawa, potentially increasing the sport's visibility and fan engagement. The partnership with the Ottawa Senators could provide the Charge with enhanced resources and facilities, making it an attractive destination for players. This move also reflects a growing trend of integrating women's sports teams with established men's teams, which can lead to increased investment and support. The Charge's presence at CTC could boost local economic activity through increased attendance and related spending.
What's Next?
The Charge and Senators will continue to collaborate closely, with potential plans to include the Charge in the new arena development at LeBreton Flats. This partnership may lead to further integration of operations and marketing efforts, potentially attracting more fans and sponsors. The Charge's improved facilities could also aid in recruiting top talent, enhancing the team's competitiveness in the PWHL.
