What's Happening?
Instructure, in collaboration with Amazon Web Services (AWS), is set to develop AI-powered tools aimed at expanding learning access for underserved communities globally. This initiative is part of the AWS Education Equity Initiative and focuses on two
main workstreams. The first workstream addresses the challenge faced by many under-resourced institutions that remain on outdated, on-premise systems due to the high cost and complexity of migration. The AI-powered LMS migration tools are designed to make this transition faster and more affordable, enabling more learners to access modern learning infrastructure. The second workstream enhances Canvas Career capabilities to support workforce development and continuing education, particularly for adult learners and community colleges. In its first year, the initiative aims to reach approximately 900,000 learners, including 280,000 from underserved communities, with a goal to expand to 5.4 million learners over four years.

This initiative is significant as it addresses the educational disparities faced by underserved communities, providing them with access to modern learning tools and infrastructure. By reducing the barriers to LMS migration, more institutions can modernize their systems, allowing educators to focus on improving learning outcomes rather than managing outdated technology. The expansion of Canvas Career capabilities supports workforce development, which is crucial for economic growth and individual career advancement. This effort not only aims to improve educational access but also seeks to enhance workforce readiness, thereby potentially increasing job placement and career opportunities for learners in these communities.
What's Next?
Instructure plans to publicly report the progress of this initiative starting in the second half of 2026, with updates on institutional adoption, learner reach, and workforce outcomes such as credential attainment and job placement. The initiative will initially focus on regions including the United States, Brazil, Mexico, and the United Kingdom, with plans to expand to additional areas over time. Future phases will continue to build on the tools launched, aiming to reach more institutions and learners, thereby expanding educational and career opportunities globally.
