for Gymnastics and Women's Soccer. In her role as Director of Writing Services, she will oversee the Athletic Department’s Writing Lab and manage a team of graduate student tutors. Before this appointment, Matson worked as an editorial assistant for a peer-review science journal and as an adjunct faculty member at Duquesne University, where she taught introductory literature and composition courses. She also has over 15 years of experience in editing and writing, including a tenure as a freelance writer for the Pittsburgh Tribune Review. Matson is an alumna of Allegheny College, holding dual majors in English and Communication Arts with a minor in Psychology, and earned a Master of Arts in English Literature and a Master of Fine Arts in Nonfiction Writing from the University of Pittsburgh.
Why It's Important?
Matson's appointment is significant for the academic and athletic development of student-athletes at the University of Pittsburgh. Her extensive background in academic support, writing, and editing will enhance the resources available to student-athletes, particularly those in Gymnastics and Women's Soccer. By overseeing the Writing Lab and its staff, she will play a crucial role in improving the writing skills and academic performance of these students. This focus on academic excellence, alongside athletic pursuits, underscores the university's commitment to holistic student development. Her experience as a former collegiate athlete in soccer and lacrosse also provides her with a unique perspective on the challenges and needs of student-athletes, enabling her to offer more tailored and effective support. This move aims to strengthen the academic foundation for athletes, potentially leading to higher graduation rates and better post-collegiate opportunities.
What's Next?
Matson will continue to develop and implement academic support strategies for student-athletes, focusing on enhancing writing proficiency and overall academic success. Her leadership in the Writing Lab will likely involve expanding resources and programs to meet the evolving needs of student-athletes. The university will monitor the impact of these services on academic performance and student well-being. Her continued involvement with the Women's Soccer team, which she has observed grow into a 'powerhouse,' suggests a sustained commitment to their academic and athletic achievements. Future initiatives might include workshops, one-on-one tutoring, and specialized academic planning to ensure student-athletes maintain high academic standards while competing at a collegiate level.
Beyond the Headlines
Matson's career trajectory highlights the increasing emphasis on comprehensive support systems for student-athletes in collegiate sports. The integration of robust academic services, such as a dedicated writing lab and academic counseling, reflects a broader trend in higher education to ensure that athletic success does not come at the expense of academic achievement. This approach not only benefits the individual student-athletes by preparing them for careers beyond sports but also enhances the reputation of the university's athletic programs. The commitment to providing such resources can attract prospective student-athletes who prioritize both academic rigor and athletic opportunity, fostering a more balanced and sustainable model for collegiate sports programs. Her personal philosophy, emphasizing hard work over innate talent, is likely to inspire and motivate the student-athletes she supports.
