What's Happening?
Provital has launched Kromboost, a new upcycled protein-based bioactive ingredient designed to preserve the structural integrity, hydration, and color of hair fibers under repeated thermal and chemical stress. Kromboost is derived from barley malt rootlets,
a byproduct of craft beer brewing, sourced locally. Through an enzymatic hydrolysis process, these rootlets are transformed into hydrolyzed proteins rich in peptides and polyphenols, further enhanced with serine, a hygroscopic amino acid naturally present in hair keratin. This ingredient offers a dual-action mechanism: film-forming peptides coat the hair cuticle to limit pigment loss and shield against aggressors, while other peptides diffuse into the cortex to reinforce keratin structure, and serine binds water to maintain elasticity and softness. Ex vivo evaluations on various hair types demonstrated Kromboost's ability to reduce hair breakage, improve keratin thermal stability, and increase internal moisture retention, as well as enhance color retention.
Why It's Important?
Kromboost addresses a significant and growing consumer demand in the U.S. hair care market for products that go beyond damage repair to offer long-term hair fiber performance and protection. With 43% of hair product launches between 2020 and 2025 featuring protein-based ingredients, the market is clearly shifting towards preventative and holistic hair health solutions. This product is important for the cosmetics industry as it offers a sustainable, science-backed ingredient that aligns with consumer preferences for natural origin, vegan, and environmentally friendly products. By utilizing an upcycled byproduct from craft beer brewing, Kromboost also contributes to circular economy principles, reducing waste and promoting resource efficiency. For consumers, it promises enhanced hair strength, moisture, and color vibrancy, even with demanding styling routines, potentially reducing the need for multiple specialized products.
What's Next?
Kromboost is formulated for use at a 2% dosage in aqueous systems and is suitable for both leave-on and rinse-off hair care formulations. Its certifications (Halal, Cosmos approved, vegan, China-compliant, 100% natural origin according to ISO 16128) position it for broad market adoption globally, including the U.S. The next steps involve its integration into various hair care products by formulators and brands. As consumer awareness of sustainable and high-performance ingredients grows, Provital will likely focus on marketing Kromboost's unique benefits, particularly its upcycled origin and proven efficacy across diverse hair types. This could lead to new product lines emphasizing 'Hairspan Evolution'—the concept of hair as a living biological system requiring long-term care—and further research into other upcycled ingredients for cosmetic applications.
Beyond the Headlines
Beyond its immediate application in hair care, Kromboost represents a broader trend towards sustainable innovation and the circular economy within the beauty industry. The utilization of industrial byproducts, like barley malt rootlets, transforms waste into valuable resources, reducing environmental impact and promoting resource efficiency. This approach not only offers economic benefits by creating new revenue streams from waste but also addresses ethical concerns regarding sustainability and responsible consumption. The scientific validation of Kromboost's performance across different hair types highlights the importance of inclusive product development, ensuring that innovations cater to a diverse consumer base. This ingredient could inspire other industries to explore similar upcycling opportunities, fostering a more sustainable and innovative approach to product development across various sectors.
