What's Happening?
Rock Hill has announced a significant investment deal with Octapharma, a pharmaceutical company, to develop a biomedical campus on land previously intended for a Carolina Panthers practice facility. The $1.5 billion investment will see Octapharma purchase
50 acres to build its first U.S. facility, creating 1,500 jobs over the next decade. Additionally, Novant Health plans to invest $300 million and hire 250 people. The site, which was abandoned by David Tepper's development company in 2022 due to financing disagreements, will now be transformed into a life sciences hub. The city of Rock Hill still owns over 160 acres of the site as part of a legal settlement with Tepper.
Why It's Important?
This development marks a significant economic boost for Rock Hill, promising job creation and economic diversification. The investment in the life sciences sector aligns with the city's strategic goals and could position Rock Hill as a key player in the pharmaceutical industry. The project also represents a recovery from the halted Panthers facility, turning a stalled development into a thriving economic opportunity. The state and local tax incentives offered to Octapharma highlight the competitive measures taken to attract such substantial investments, which could have long-term benefits for the region's economy and employment landscape.
What's Next?
Operations at the new Octapharma facility are expected to begin in the mid-2030s. The city will finalize the sale of the property, and construction will commence following the completion of site preparations. The development will likely attract further investments and businesses to the area, enhancing Rock Hill's economic profile. The city and state will continue to monitor the project's progress and its impact on local infrastructure and services.
