What's Happening?
The Humboldt Builders Exchange, a trade group in Humboldt County, California, is significantly increasing its outreach to younger residents to address a looming workforce crisis in the construction industry. Executive Director Jada Brotman highlighted
that many long-standing, family-owned construction companies are facing the retirement of their experienced workers and are struggling to find young people to fill these roles. Despite the availability of numerous construction jobs, there's a community perception of limited opportunities. To counter this, the exchange is expanding its trade scholarship programs, facilitating job shadowing opportunities, and collaborating with the Humboldt County Office of Education for events like Trades Day. These initiatives aim to provide clear pathways for training and employment in construction trades, ensuring a sustainable future for the local industry.
Why It's Important?
The aging workforce in the construction sector poses a significant threat to the economic stability and development of Humboldt County. A shortage of skilled labor can lead to delays in construction projects, increased costs, and a decline in the quality of infrastructure. This initiative by the Humboldt Builders Exchange is crucial for maintaining a robust local economy, supporting existing businesses, and attracting new investment. By actively engaging with younger generations, the exchange is working to bridge the gap between available jobs and a perceived lack of opportunity, ensuring that essential construction services remain viable. The success of these efforts will directly impact housing development, commercial growth, and public works projects in the region.
What's Next?
The Humboldt Builders Exchange plans to continue and expand its current recruitment and training programs. This includes further promotion of trade scholarships, increasing job shadowing placements, and strengthening collaborations with educational institutions like the College of the Redwoods for job postings and resume sharing. The annual Trades Day event will continue to provide hands-on experience for thousands of youths. Additionally, the exchange is engaging with city and county planners to identify and remove roadblocks for developers, aiming to create a more conducive environment for construction projects and, by extension, job growth. A key priority for Brotman is to find ways to retain trained individuals within Humboldt County, preventing them from leaving for opportunities elsewhere.
