What's Happening?
A group of students from Naperville Central High School has developed a self-watering device called 'Plant Pal,' which has advanced to a national pitch contest. The team, consisting of Katelyn Burke, Jack Swigert, Ben Reed, and Mahika Solanki, created
the device as part of their Business INCubatoredu class. The 'Plant Pal' is designed to help keep plants hydrated by using a wicking system, with a small figurine named Sprout that assists in water transfer. The students' innovation won first place at the 2026 INCubatoredu Pitch Night for Naperville District 203, earning them $3,000 in seed funding. Their success has led them to the national competition in Chicago, where they will present their product alongside other student businesses.
Why It's Important?
The success of 'Plant Pal' highlights the potential of student-led innovation and entrepreneurship in addressing everyday challenges. By participating in programs like Business INCubatoredu, students gain valuable skills in business development, problem-solving, and teamwork. The project not only provides a practical solution for plant care but also demonstrates the impact of educational initiatives that encourage creativity and real-world application of classroom learning. The students' achievement underscores the importance of supporting young entrepreneurs and fostering an environment where innovative ideas can thrive. Additionally, the growing interest in 'Plant Pal' and its preorders indicate a market demand for practical, user-friendly gardening solutions.
What's Next?
The Naperville Central students will present 'Plant Pal' at the 2026 INCubatoredu National Pitch contest in Chicago on July 8. As they prepare for the competition, the team will continue to refine their product and presentation skills. Success at the national level could open doors for further development and commercialization of 'Plant Pal,' potentially leading to partnerships with retailers and expansion into new markets. The students' journey may inspire other young entrepreneurs to pursue their ideas and participate in similar programs, contributing to a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship in education.
