What's Happening?
OceanaGold Philippines Inc. (OGP) has entered into a two-year agreement with Geocycle Philippines, a waste management business of the Holcim Group, to reduce landfill disposal from its Didipio gold-copper mine in Nueva Vizcaya. The initiative involves
diverting up to 70% of the mine's residual waste to a cement kiln coprocessing facility in Norzagaray, Bulacan. This process will utilize waste materials such as paper, plastics, textiles, and packaging as alternative fuel and raw materials in cement manufacturing. The project aims to extend the operational life of the mine's sanitary landfill from 1.8 years to approximately 10.8 years, potentially saving OGP up to $156,000 by avoiding the need for a new landfill facility.
Why It's Important?
This partnership highlights a significant step towards sustainable waste management in the mining industry, aligning with OceanaGold's Zero Waste to Landfill goal. By reducing landfill dependency, the initiative supports resource recovery and circular economy practices, offering environmental benefits and cost savings. The collaboration also reflects a growing trend in industries to adopt more sustainable practices, which can enhance corporate responsibility and community relations. The success of such initiatives could encourage other companies to explore similar waste management solutions, potentially leading to broader environmental and economic benefits.
What's Next?
The initiative is expected to continue for two years, during which OGP will monitor the effectiveness of the waste diversion process. The company may explore further sustainable practices, such as expanding the use of biodegradable waste composting and plastic densification technologies. Stakeholders, including local communities and environmental groups, will likely observe the project's impact on reducing landfill use and preserving natural resources. The outcome of this initiative could influence future policies and practices in the mining and waste management sectors.
