What's Happening?
A recent survey by the Smart Energy Consumer Collaborative (SECC) reveals that 84% of homebuyers consider energy efficiency important when purchasing a home. However, real estate agents often lack the confidence and knowledge to discuss energy-efficient
features with clients. The survey, which included over 1,500 real estate professionals, found that while agents are familiar with energy efficiency, they are not confident in explaining advanced technologies like heat pumps and EV charging. Many agents defer energy-related questions to external experts, indicating a need for better training and resources. Despite the high interest from buyers, agents do not see energy efficiency as a major selling point, with 42% believing it has no impact on property value.
Why It's Important?
As the energy transition accelerates, real estate agents can play a crucial role in educating homebuyers about the benefits of energy-efficient homes. The survey highlights a gap between consumer interest and agent knowledge, suggesting an opportunity for collaboration between utilities and real estate professionals. By improving their understanding of energy efficiency, agents can better guide buyers, potentially increasing the market value of energy-efficient homes. This shift could lead to broader adoption of energy-efficient technologies, contributing to sustainability goals and reducing energy consumption.
What's Next?
The SECC's findings suggest a need for targeted training programs for real estate agents to enhance their understanding of energy efficiency and clean energy technologies. Utilities and industry organizations could partner with real estate professionals to provide accessible resources and training. As consumer interest in energy efficiency grows, agents who can effectively communicate the benefits of energy-efficient homes may gain a competitive advantage in the market.
