What's Happening?
Liberty, a luxury department store, is inviting UK artists to participate in an open call to design its 2027 beauty advent calendar. This initiative marks the first time Liberty has opened the creative process to the wider artistic community. Artists
are tasked with reimagining Liberty at Christmas, creating an original interpretation of the retailer's historic Tudor flagship in London. The submissions should celebrate the brand's heritage and eccentricity while capturing the festive spirit. The winner will collaborate with Liberty's in-house creative team to develop their design, which will be documented across the retailer’s social media and digital channels. Additionally, the winning artist will receive a £15,000 prize. The open call is part of Liberty's commitment to championing creativity and emerging artistic talent.
Why It's Important?
This initiative by Liberty underscores the growing trend of integrating art and commerce, providing a platform for emerging artists to gain recognition and exposure. By opening the design process to the wider artistic community, Liberty is fostering creativity and supporting new talent, which can lead to innovative and diverse artistic expressions. The beauty advent calendar has become a significant marketing tool, recognized for both its beauty products and the artwork that surrounds it. This move could enhance Liberty's brand image as a supporter of the arts and attract a broader audience interested in unique and creative collaborations. It also highlights the importance of art in retail, potentially influencing other brands to adopt similar strategies.
What's Next?
Artists interested in participating must submit their designs by July 29, with judging taking place between July 29 and August 6. Twelve artists will be shortlisted, and a final judging panel will select three finalists. The winning artist will then work with Liberty's creative team to develop their design. This process will be documented and shared on Liberty's digital platforms, providing further exposure for the artist. The initiative may inspire other retailers to engage with the artistic community, potentially leading to more collaborations between artists and brands.
