What's Happening?
Viking Heliskiing, a tourism operator, has successfully acquired two disused municipal buildings at Siglufjörður Airport for ISK 12 million. The purchase includes the airport's former terminal building and an equipment storage building, while the airport and runway
remain under municipal ownership. The deal was finalized after the company submitted a revised bid without conditions that were part of an earlier proposal. The initial offer was rejected due to conditions requiring the municipality to ensure the buildings were structurally sound and free from defects. The acting mayor, Þórir Hákonarson, stated that the condition of the buildings is known, and future repairs will be the responsibility of the new owner.
Why It's Important?
This acquisition is significant for the local economy and tourism industry in Siglufjörður. By transferring ownership of the airport buildings to a private entity, the municipality can potentially reduce maintenance costs and focus on other community projects. For Viking Heliskiing, the purchase provides an opportunity to expand its operations and enhance its service offerings, potentially attracting more tourists to the region. This deal reflects a broader trend of privatization and investment in tourism infrastructure, which can lead to increased economic activity and job creation in the area.
