Recent research, compiling data from 69 randomized trials involving 2,387 individuals, suggests that High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) can achieve significant fitness improvements in shorter durations compared to moderate-intensity continuous exercise.
The pooled analysis found that 23 minutes of HIIT sessions yielded the same fitness benefits as 63 minutes of steady moderate exercise. Shorter HIIT sessions also proved effective, with six minutes delivering half the full benefit and eleven minutes providing four-fifths of the total gain. Crucially, training for longer than 23 minutes did not result in further measurable fitness improvements. This duration specifically refers to the working part of the session, excluding warm-up and cool-down periods. The study also highlighted that HIIT is an adaptable strategy for improving functional fitness in older adults, enhancing performance in daily activities and supporting healthy aging.
