What's Happening?
Amazon and X-energy are collaborating to build a 12-reactor nuclear facility in Richland, Washington, with a projected operational date in the early 2030s. This facility will utilize Small Modular Reactors (SMRs), specifically X-energy's Xe-100 model,
which are designed for inherent safety and scalability. Each SMR uses fuel pebbles, described as fist-sized, that contain the energy equivalent of six tons of coal. These pebbles are made with TRISO particles, a tri-structural isotropic particle fuel that the U.S. Department of Energy states cannot melt in a reactor. The SMRs are engineered to cool themselves passively without external intervention, water, or human input, even in unanticipated circumstances. The Richland facility is expected to generate 960 megawatts of carbon-free electricity, sufficient to power over 700,000 homes, on a footprint significantly smaller than traditional nuclear plants.
