What's Happening?
DAZN has entered the local sports rights market by securing an exclusive deal to stream Minnesota Timberwolves games. This agreement marks DAZN's first exclusive local NBA broadcast deal, with plans to launch a team-branded subscription service. The service will
offer 15 games for free, with additional games available through a subscription. DAZN is also pursuing similar deals with other NBA teams, including the Cavaliers, Grizzlies, Pacers, and Spurs, as well as acquiring streaming rights for teams on YES and MSG Networks.
Why It's Important?
This move by DAZN represents a significant shift in the sports broadcasting landscape, as streaming services increasingly compete with traditional television networks for sports rights. By securing exclusive deals, DAZN aims to expand its presence in the U.S. sports market and attract a broader audience. The deal also reflects the growing trend of sports teams and leagues exploring digital platforms to reach fans, potentially reshaping how sports content is consumed. This could lead to increased competition among streaming services and impact the future of sports broadcasting rights.
What's Next?
DAZN plans to finalize additional exclusive deals with other NBA teams, potentially expanding its portfolio to include up to ten teams. The company is also interested in hosting centralized streaming hubs for the NBA and MLB, which could launch in the next two years. As DAZN continues to negotiate with teams, the sports broadcasting landscape may see further changes, with implications for how fans access and engage with sports content. The success of DAZN's strategy could influence other streaming services to pursue similar deals.
