The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is implementing a plan to centralize control over its geological data, which is crucial for mining exploration. This initiative involves accelerating geological mapping, airborne surveys, and digitizing historical
archives to create a comprehensive national geological databank. The goal is to reduce exploration risk and extend state influence over future mineral discoveries. Unlike other major mining jurisdictions, the DRC intends to keep access to this databank under state control and charge for certain information. This move is seen by officials and industry sources as a significant step that could reshape the global cobalt market and influence the development of other critical minerals. The project, which includes a $180 million contract with Spain's Xcalibur, aims to map over 700,000 square kilometers, with the databank expected to be fully operational by the end of 2026.
