Microsoft is making progress with its Driver Quality Initiative (DQI), an ecosystem-wide effort aimed at improving the quality of drivers across Windows. The initiative focuses on four key areas: architecture, trust, lifecycle, and quality measures. Recent
advancements include enforcing the Driver Shiproom Publishing Blocklist earlier in the driver signing process, which allows for quicker rejection of problematic files. Microsoft is also piloting Cloud-Initiated Driver Recovery, a safeguard that enables Windows Update to revert affected devices to a previously known-good driver version when issues are identified. Additionally, a new publishing model for display drivers using 2-Part Hardware IDs plus Computer Hardware IDs (CHIDs) is being piloted to achieve more precise driver targeting. The Windows Driver Kit (WDK) now supports Visual Studio 2026, providing driver developers with the latest environment for building, testing, and packaging Windows drivers.
